The Masai Mara Marathon is quite possibly the most dramatic running event on the planet. Participants run a full marathon, half marathon, or 10km race through the Masai Mara ecosystem — past grazing zebra and wildebeest, across savannah plains, and with the vast African sky stretching overhead. It’s a race where you might need to pause for an elephant crossing.
Organized to raise funds for local Maasai community projects — schools, water points, healthcare clinics — the marathon combines world-class running with genuine grassroots impact. Local Maasai warriors run alongside international participants, often in their traditional shuka wraps and sandals, creating an atmosphere of shared endeavour that transcends competition.
The course is challenging — run at 1,500 metres altitude on dirt roads and savannah tracks — but the scenery makes every step worthwhile. Post-race celebrations include traditional Maasai dancing, a bush barbecue, and the chance to explore the Mara ecosystem at a more leisurely pace on game drives included in the race package.
