Best Time to Visit Kenya: A Month-by-Month Safari Calendar

One of the most common questions we receive is “when is the best time to visit Kenya?” The honest answer: any time. Kenya offers world-class wildlife viewing year-round. But different seasons bring different highlights, and understanding the seasonal rhythm helps you plan the perfect trip.

January – February: Hot, Dry, & Calving Season

These are some of Kenya’s hottest months, with clear skies and excellent visibility. In the southern Serengeti (Tanzania side), the wildebeest calving season means thousands of newborn calves — and the predators that follow them. In Kenya, the Masai Mara is quieter with lower rates, but still offers superb game viewing. Amboseli delivers stunning Kilimanjaro views in the clear dry air.

March – May: Long Rains (Green Season)

The “long rains” bring lush green landscapes, dramatic skies, and significantly lower prices. Rain usually falls in short afternoon bursts, leaving mornings clear for game drives. Birdwatching is exceptional as migrant species arrive. Fewer tourists mean more intimate encounters. This is the best value season for budget-conscious travellers.

June: Dry Season Begins

As the rains end, vegetation dries and wildlife concentrates around water sources. This is the start of peak season. The Mara begins to anticipate the migration herds arriving from Tanzania. Temperatures are pleasant — warm days, cool evenings.

July – October: Peak Safari Season & Great Migration

This is Kenya’s blockbuster period. The Great Migration arrives in the Masai Mara, with dramatic river crossings typically peaking in August and September. Predator activity is extraordinary. The weather is dry and cool — perfect for extended game drives. Book accommodation months in advance; this is the busiest and most expensive period.

November – December: Short Rains & Festive Season

The “short rains” in November bring a second green season — less intense than March-May. By mid-December, skies clear for the Christmas and New Year period, one of Kenya’s busiest tourist seasons. The landscape is green and beautiful, baby animals are abundant, and the coast is at its warmest for beach holidays.

Our Recommendation

For the migration spectacle, visit July-October. For value and fewer crowds, choose January-February or June. For birdwatching and green landscapes, go March-May. For a beach-and-bush combination, November-December is ideal. Whatever month you choose, Kenya won’t disappoint.
