At Joe Photography and Safaris, our love for Kenya’s natural beauty goes beyond capturing breathtaking moments. It drives us to actively participate in preserving the environment that sustains us all. In collaboration with the local community in Lower Subukia, Nakuru County, we have launched an ambitious project to rehabilitate vital water catchment spots and restore the escarpment that has long been a source of fresh drinking water for residents.

The Problem: Degraded Water Catchment Areas
Lower Subukiaโs escarpment has traditionally served as a lifeline for the community, providing a reliable source of fresh water. However, years of deforestation, overgrazing, and unsustainable land use have left this once-thriving ecosystem barren. The loss of tree cover has had devastating consequences:
- Diminished Water Supply: Without trees to retain water, the area faces decreased groundwater recharge and seasonal water shortages.
- Soil Erosion: The bare escarpment is vulnerable to erosion, washing away nutrient-rich topsoil essential for agriculture.
- Biodiversity Loss: The degradation has displaced wildlife and disrupted the natural balance of the ecosystem.
Our Vision: A Greener, Sustainable Future
In response to this environmental crisis, Joe Photography and Safaris, together with local residents, has embarked on a project to rehabilitate the escarpment through large-scale tree planting. By the end of 2025, we aim to plant 200,000 indigenous trees, restore the health of the water catchment areas, and create a sustainable model for conservation that benefits both the environment and the community.
Project Objectives – Conserving Water Catchment Areas in Lower Subukia
Our initiative is rooted in clear, actionable goals:
- Rehabilitate the Escarpment: Restore the vegetation cover along water sources to ensure consistent water flow and soil stability.
- Community Engagement: Involve local residents in tree planting and conservation efforts, empowering them to protect their environment.
- Promote Environmental Awareness: Educate the community about the long-term benefits of reforestation, water conservation, and sustainable land use.
- Expand Conservation Efforts: Encourage residents to plant trees on their farms (shambas) to enhance reforestation efforts and improve agricultural productivity.
Challenges We Face
While our commitment to this project is unwavering, several challenges hinder our progress:
1. Access to Seedlings
Procuring indigenous tree seedlings in the quantities required for a project of this scale is a major hurdle. Indigenous trees are vital for the regionโs ecosystem, but their availability is limited. Additionally, nurturing seedlings until they are ready for planting requires financial resources and expertise.
2. Transportation
Our current vehicle, a Toyota Corolla EA100, lacks off-road capability, making it difficult to access remote planting sites. This logistical limitation slows down the transportation of seedlings and volunteers, affecting the efficiency of our efforts.
3. Scaling the Project
Reaching our goal of planting 200,000 trees necessitates increased capacity, including more tools, manpower, and infrastructure. Without sufficient funding, expanding our operations to reach more areas and involve more community members is a challenge.
Our Approach
Community Involvement
We believe that conservation efforts are most effective when they are community-driven. Our approach involves:
- Workshops and Training: Educating residents on the importance of reforestation and equipping them with skills to care for planted trees.
- Incentives for Participation: Providing seedlings and support to farmers who plant trees on their land.
- Youth Engagement: Involving schools and youth groups in planting activities to instill a culture of environmental stewardship.
Partnerships
We are actively seeking partnerships with like-minded organizations, environmental NGOs, and government agencies to amplify our impact. Collaborations will help us access technical expertise, resources, and additional funding.
Monitoring and Evaluation
To ensure the sustainability of our efforts, we have developed a system to monitor tree survival rates and assess the long-term health of the rehabilitated areas. Regular evaluations will help us refine our strategies and measure progress toward our goals.
Call for Support
We cannot achieve this ambitious vision alone. To overcome the challenges we face and make meaningful progress, we are seeking grants and support from individuals, organizations, and institutions committed to environmental conservation.
Your support will enable us to:
- Procure and Nurture Seedlings: With adequate funding, we can source high-quality indigenous seedlings and establish nurseries to ensure a steady supply.
- Upgrade Transportation: Acquiring an off-road vehicle will allow us to reach remote planting sites efficiently, ensuring timely delivery of seedlings and volunteers.
- Expand Community Outreach: Scaling up our educational programs and incentivizing participation will encourage broader community involvement.
- Build Local Capacity: Training residents in tree care and sustainable practices will ensure the long-term success of the project.
Why Your Support Matters
This project is about more than planting trees. It is about securing a sustainable future for Lower Subukia and its people. Hereโs how your contribution will make a difference:
1. Restoring Vital Water Sources
Reforesting the escarpment will enhance groundwater recharge, ensure a steady water supply for the community, and reduce the risk of waterborne diseases.
2. Combating Climate Change
Planting trees helps absorb carbon dioxide, mitigating the effects of climate change and improving air quality in the region.
3. Supporting Local Livelihoods
By involving the community in conservation efforts, we create job opportunities and enhance agricultural productivity through improved soil quality.
4. Preserving Biodiversity
Restoring the natural habitat will support the return of wildlife, enriching the regionโs biodiversity and strengthening its ecosystem.
